Nano tungsten oxide may be used for producing thermal insulation dispersion, and therefore be applied in buildings or vehicles for building energy efficiency. It may be applied in window glasses for heat insulation in hot summer. Tungsten oxide may also be used as a photocatalyst. However, tungsten oxide is not perfect in terms of photocatalysis - it has some defects.
Moreover, currently, there is no way to solve these problems at once, such as the problem of lower position of the conduction band, the problem of the forbidden band width, and the quantum yield problem. Because many factors are contradictory. For example, for a semiconductor photocatalyst having a small band gap, although the available light is greatly improved, the reduction in the forbidden band width means that it has low photo-redox capability. For the wide-bandgap semiconductor photocatalyst, although the spectral range utilized is small, it has a strong photoreduction and oxidation ability.
