Molybdenum market update on April 28, 2025
The domestic molybdenum market in China remains stable, but as positive factors weaken, negotiations between buyers and sellers are gradually heating up, leading to reduced market enthusiasm and slower order growth. On the positive side: first, some downstream users, such as Baotou High-Tech, Xinxing Ductile Iron Pipes, Guangdong Shaogang, Zhongnan Steel, and Baosteel Zhanjiang, continue to maintain rigid demand procurement, supporting suppliers' confidence in holding prices; second, with molybdenum prices at a relatively low level, the upcoming May Day holiday prompting concentrated purchasing, and limited capacity release from molybdenum mining companies, spot inventory levels remain low. On the negative side: first, steel companies have largely completed their procurement plans, naturally cooling market activity; second, compared to mid-April, current molybdenum product prices are higher, leading buyers to adopt a cautious purchasing approach.
According to the China Iron and Steel Association, from January to March 2025, key steel-consuming industries showed divergent trends, with the construction sector continuing to decline while manufacturing maintained steady growth. Real estate indicators continued to fall, though the decline narrowed; infrastructure investment sustained growth with a slight increase in pace. From January to March, real estate development investment fell 9.9% year-on-year, construction area decreased by 9.5%, completed area dropped by 14.3%, new construction starts fell by 24.4%, and commercial housing sales area declined by 3.0%. Over the same period, infrastructure investment grew by 5.8% year-on-year, maintaining relatively fast growth, with the growth rate expanding by 0.2 percentage points compared to January-February.
