Molybdenum market update on May 22, 2025
The overall market sentiment of molybdenum in China remains optimistic. Supported by suppliers' intensified reluctance to sell amid bullish expectations and moderate downstream demand, market trading activity is brisk, with most product prices continuing to rise and transaction volumes remaining high.
In the molybdenum concentrate market, a pattern of robust supply and demand prevails. Driven by factors such as rising international molybdenum prices, limited spot market supply, and active downstream inquiries, suppliers generally have a strong confidence in raising prices. Currently, product prices have broken through the 3,600 yuan/ton-degree threshold. In the molybdenum iron market, although many steel enterprises are still willing to enter the market for molybdenum iron bidding and the price of molybdenum concentrate has risen strongly, the selling price of molybdenum iron has increased, but the profit margin of intermediate smelting enterprises remains small. In the molybdenum chemical and its products market, a strong wait-and-see sentiment prevails, and the prices of molybdates and other molybdenum chemical products have risen slightly with raw material prices.
According to the Baotou Municipal Bureau of Industry and Information Technology, among the 14 key monitored steel products in Baotou City, prices of 2 products increased month-on-month, while those of 12 products decreased. Among them, pig iron saw the largest decline, with an average price of 2,658 yuan/ton, decreasing by 85 yuan/ton month-on-month, a decline of 3.1%. Year-on-year, all 14 product prices decreased. High-carbon ferrochromium saw the largest decline, with an average price of 6,900 yuan/ton, decreasing by 1,500 yuan/ton year-on-year, a decline of 17.9%; seamless steel pipes saw the smallest decline, with an average price of 4,180 yuan/ton, decreasing by 233 yuan/ton year-on-year, a decline of 5.3%.
